EFIWE NEWS: UI Workers Likely To Begin Strike On March 13th

The University of Ibadan workers are likely to begin strike tomorrow, March 13, 2017, to protest illegal pension deductions and a shortfall of salaries.

According to a source who spoke under the condition of anonymity, the Non-Academic workers are certainly going on strike tomorrow.

While speaking on the phone with the ASUU chairman, Dr. Deji Omole, he said, “We are still waiting for the approval to proceed with the warning strike from the national headquarters and until we get the approval, I cannot categorically say that there will be strike tomorrow.”

THE PAGE also spoke with Mr. Tunji Oladejo, the Director, Directorate of Public Communication and he said that the management has met with the Unions’ leaders and have been working round the clock to solve the crisis.

He further told THE PAGE that the Unions will be having a congress tomorrow morning and it is highly likely that the decision to go on strike will eventually be reviewed.

THE PAGE reported on March 3, that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter has threatened to embark on strike if the shortfall in the payment of salaries and allowances of its members continued.

THE PAGE further reported on March 8, that the Chairman, Dr. Deji Omole, on behalf of the Union at an emergency meeting on that day threatened to proceed on an indefinite strike to protest illegal pension deductions and a shortfall of salaries.

It was reported that the Union has since given the university management an ultimatum to respond to the petition not later than March 10 before it embarks on an indefinite strike.

On March 10, 2017, the management through a release signed by the Vice Chancellor and made available on the university website submitted that, “I implore the Joint Action Congress of SSANU, NAAT& NASU to give the University management some time to address all the issues raised in the Unions’ Resolution and constructively resolve them in the best interest of all stakeholders.”

While the Vice Chancellor differed many of the matters to University Council, he also provided response to some of the requests as he declared in response to the illegal pension deduction, “The Employee’s Contributory Pension shown on pay slips is just a reflection of each member of staff’s pension contribution deducted by the Federal Government from source. Please note that NO PENSION DEDUCTION IS EVER MADE BY THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN.”

On the issue of shortfall, he also explained that “The Management of the University of Ibadan has taken positive steps to resolve the issue of short-fall in salaries by visiting Abuja on many occasions. The office of the Accountant General of the Federation has promised that March 2017 salary will be paid in full as it was in January 2017. It has also promised to refund the short-fall in February salary with the payment of April 2017 salary.”
