About Home Spike

Homespike is an Online platform where the accommodation problems of Students, Corp Members and Young professionals are proffered with Solutions.

 An Online Platform where as a student you can either rent out your apartment(by virtue of relocation) or you can rent an apartment for your use without any agent fee.

We understand that one of the core existence and comfortability of life, is finding a place to call Home. Where after a days job, you are rest assured that you have a place where you can enjoy rest.

It is with this that we decided to make this a reality for thousands of the aforementioned people.

What differentiates us and makes us standout is the Structure in which we work with. We understand that life in itself could be hard, agents are all out in exploiting people.

Unibadan Efiwe had a chat with Emmanuel, who's the CEO of Home Spike, talks more about His Brand, Operations/Services and lots more in new Interview.

 Can We Meet You?

My name is Emmanuel Olayiwola, a 400 Level Student in the Department of Psychology, University of Ibadan. I also run Homespike, a startup that seeks to solve the accommodation problem that is every common especially amongst young adults.

Can you tell Us more about your Brand, HomeSpike?

Ok Great, I'm always very excited to speak about Homespike.

We understand that most students find it difficult to get accommodation at a time like this, the begining of the session. And because of how urgent it is for us, most times we get cheated by agents and at other times, we pay more and get less of the dream room we really want. is an accommodation booking platform built specifically for young adults expecially students who need an apartment to stay, students can now discover amazing vacant places, inspect them and pay for their most preferred apartment.

Homespike completely removes the headache it takes for students to secure, pay for and move into any vacant apartment.

We are able to achieve this by making these vacant apartments available directly to students on the website so they can make a choice and book directly.

I'll say that Homespike is the one platform that eliminate the high level of stress, horrible experiences, fraud and time waste accommodation seekers undergo in search for available apartments to move into.

Wow impressive but can you tell me a major reason why I should consult Home Spike before renting an apartment when there are other options  and again, Online Business Transactions aren't really reliable these days?

You really deserve the best, I believe every student does. Homespike is here to give every student the well deserved ability to find an accommodation for themselves without moving a step, just visit, no other delivers such to students.

Our promise is to deliver these with utmost simplicity and speed, we therefore don't expose students to what I'll call agents wahala, and hidden fees, no other delivers such to students.

Homespike is a by students for student service, our entire service is mostly run by students. I see those that use our platform everyday, this is really eliminating the trust issues that students might have using homespike because it's online. *smiles*

Talking about payment of an Apartment using Home Spike, Would I be paying fully or instalments is allowed?

Most apartments available for rent requires that the renter pays a full amount, although their are apartments that allows for a short stays ranging from few weeks to months.

How does Home Spike intend to make profit from the services rendered when there would be no "Agent fee" charged?

Homespike started last year December with UI, we have partnered with over 50 home managers, landlords and property investors who trust us to fill up their apartments with high quality tenants, what I mean by high quality are those tenants that has no crime records and will be good members of the society, they love students. 

We have a legally binding agreement with our partners about our business model, which is how we make money; we charge each of our partner a percentage for each transaction completed i.e for each renter we get into their vacant apartment.

Is "Home Spike" Apartment Booking/Services meant for only the rich?

We are totally tailor made for students, the young adults, those that haven't built their own house. Definitely not for the rich, we have rents that are has low as 40 thousand naira, even lower.

In terms of Safety and Security, any plans put in place for the renter by Home Spike?

Every accommodation listed on the homespike platform can be reviewed, if you've got complaints​ about the environment, neighbourhood or security issues that is not being attended to; you can simply place a review on that apartment for everyone to see, we have put this in place to keep the property managers in check about the welfare of anyone that uses homespike to get into their property.

Talking about Booking apartment, can Home Spike provide an apartment for me in my own preferred location/state or it is restricted to Ibadan only?

We're a 3 month old startup, we are growing really fast, we hope to effectively cover the entire city before moving out to other states. We don't want to fall into the trap of expanding too fast without the capacity to handle operations and demands.

You said something about a tenant having no crime records and be a good member of the society, How do you intend to know someone who would be a high quality tenant?

During the apartment booking process, every homespike user must be verified by submitting a face shot and an ID before completing the booking process, this is due to our promise to of high quality to partners, we also call the number(s) of referees submitted before they're given the key to move in.

Is there a Business Plan for "Home Spike"?

Yes. We've being talking to investors and that requires us to be very tight on our financials, our strategy and how they're being executed.

You running Home Spike and also Studying Psychology, How do you cope?

Yes homespike started few months ago, I'm still a  student, coping with academics and business will require an enormous amount of balance and trade offs with time and mind. I hope to be able to handle this.

After your graduation, do you intend to go fully into running "Home Spike" or you got other plans?

Homespike *smiles*. It actually takes an average of 13 years to fully mature a startup.

Can you tell me at least 3 different locations within Ibadan that I can get an Apartment through Home Spike since you have over 50  Home managers within 3months of Start-up?

Ring road, Agbowo-Water-Barika-Sango, Bodija. Yes we have our partners at various locations in the city.

Is all "Home Spike" operations/services run by you or you have a team? (If yes, tell Us the number as at now)

Yes we have an amazingly smart team of 6 now.

What inspires you?

Hmmm. God, who is the source of everything brings on my way practical insights from those successful entrepreneurs that have gone before me.

 I really observe and follow Jack ma,  Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Paul Graham of YCombinator, Steve Bank and a host of others.

What are the challenges you faced running "Home Spike" since its start-up?

Lots ranging from fully developing an initial strategic approach to solving the accommodation problem to the problem of operational capital to power to convincing partners to finding the right talent; challenges are unending, and we're excited to take them on has they come, I believe it is a process that every entrepreneurial venture must go through to de-risk the business.

Tell us briefly about your Family Background?

I was enrolled in Elementary School in 1995 which was a year after I was given birth to as the 3rd child and 1st son. In October, 2005, I was admitted into high School. 

Life lessons while growing up has taught me that hard work and thrift are sometimes the only things a person can afford.

This has birth in me enthusiasm about entrepreneurship, leadership and management, and the love to be part of new inventions that creates value.

Is your parent fully in support of "Home Spike"?

I believe that leaders must consitently communicate their vision, this is how to get people that do not really undestand what you're doing to stand by you. 

This is the exact strategy that has helped me bring my parents to full support.

Where do you see yourself and your brand "Home Spike" in the next 3 years?

I see myself leading homespike through accomplishing greater milestones, I believe we would have applied our solution to more areas of coverage, expand our team and be fully profitable.

With your experience, what can you say about Housing/Apartment rental In Ibadan and Nigeria as a whole?

Housing and apartment rental in Ibadan and Nigeria has a hole, it is still been handled traditionally by incombents, there's still lots of work to be done to make the entire process more transparent and I believe most of these solutions will be technologically driven.

What's your favorite quote?

Ohh Ok. I've lots of quote that I find facinating. My fav is by Theodore Roosevelt, quite long though he says "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat".

Any words you wish to say before we wrap up this interview?

I want to give kudos to Unibadan Efiwe for this kind of platform; I believe that we can make the entrepreneurial ecosystem in UI very vibrant, I believe great things can be built here in Ibadan, by students.
