“Management placing the cart before the horse” – SRC Speaker

The University of Ibadan Management has yet issued another emergency notification of having the swearing-in ceremony of the Students’ Union officers-elect on Thursday, June 16, 2016. This is contained in a copy of the letter signed by the Deputy Registrar (Students), Mr. S O Ojelabi on the directive of the Dean of Students, Prof. ATP Ajuwape.

The letter obtained from an anonymous source states that the ceremony which is expected to hold at the Senate Chamber by 10am will also feature a Students’ stakeholders meeting. Dean of Students, Professor ATP Ajuwape Speaking on the phone with the Students’ Union President, Mr. Aliyu Olateju Oladimeji for his reaction on the swearing-in ceremony, he said that he has no comment for now.

He said he would prefer to speak face to face with our correspondent the next day as he was not on campus. In his reaction, the President-elect, Mr. Ojo Oluwanifemi Emmanuel said that he does not see it as a bad idea to do the swearing-in ceremony despite the short notice and the current situation of things on campus.

“When I receive the notification, I called the Vice Chancellor and he said that since exams are near and he would want students to settle very quickly for their exams, that is why the swearing –in will hold in few days.” Nifemi said. The President-elect also added that he spoke with the SU president and the president does not see anything wrong in it, therefore, he believes that nothing is wrong with having the swearing-in on Thursday.

In a telephone interview with the Speaker of the SRC, Mr. Toheeb Arogundade, he stated that “the school is placing the cart before the horse.” The Speaker further stated that the message he received earlier was that there will be a Stakeholders meeting on Thursday but not swearing- in ceremony.

“I received a message last week that there will be a Student Stakeholders meeting the next Thursday only to receive a memo today Monday to remind me that there will be a Stakeholders meeting and adding that the swearing – in ceremony for SU officers-elect would hold that same day.” the Speaker said.

The Speaker however noted that swearing – in ceremony is not the next action to be taken rather, we should all find lasting solutions to the problems facing students and discussing progressive ways to improve students’ welfare condition
