EFIWE NEWS: Accommodation Succour As Private Hostel Developers Begins In University Of Ibadan

Accommodation problem within the University of Ibadan Campus will soon become history as 17 prospective hostel developers signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Management with a view to providing private hostels for both undergraduate and postgraduate Students.

The developers who are at various pre-stages of execution were enthusiastic to undertake the project, believing that there is good market for their services.

Speaking at the occasion, the UI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka who urged the developers to expedite building process disclosed that the university with over 30, 000 student population could only accommodate a little over 8, 000 students on campus, leaving the remaining large number to arrange accommodation for themselves.

"But with this Build-Operate-and-Transfer model, many students will be accommodated on campus and learning will be much easier ", the VC said, pointing out that his administration was committed to making life more bearable and meaningful for the Students.

According to Prof. Olayinka, " I know that this partnership has worked in some places, therefore, there is no reason for its failure in UI. We will give you every assistance you require to succeed because we are very passionate about providing accommodation for our Students "

Prof. Olayinka who later signed and presented the MoU to some of the investors insisted that his administration would do everything possible to ensure that the students have positive impression about UI because "they will graduate and go into the world, but they will never forget the experience they had while in UI"

The investors are expected to build and operate the hostels for 25 years, after which they will transfer the hostels to the university for permanent ownership.
The UI currently has 12 halls of residence (10 for undergraduate and two for postgraduate students) including Alenxander Brown, Awolowo, Independence, Kuti and Mellanby.

Others are Abubakar, Nnamdi Azikwe, Queen Elizabeth, Queen India, Sultan Bello Tafawa Balewa and Tedder Halls.
